Louise Harwood

Great Britain
  • 92 - Mr Potts
  • 13 - Whitson

British rider Louise Harwood (40), who runs her own yard near Eardisley in Herefordshire, competed at Badminton last year on one of her two 2016 rides Mr Potts. After a good season in 2014 the pair were short-listed for the British squad for the WEG in France and gained 12th place at Burghley. Her ride Whitson was BE’s top horse of 2014. Last year with Mr Potts she completed Burghley.

Louise began eventing with the Radnor and West Hereford Pony Club also taking part in other equestrian competitions including mounted games, show jumping and dressage. Aged 16 she first competed in affiliated competition and was a member of the Welsh JRN team. Louise gained a BSc in biology from Cardiff University followed by a PGDip in Applied Equine Science at the Royal Agricultural College and worked part-time in marketing before turning to a career in horses.

In 2003 Louise won the Welsh Championships and in 2006 competed at her first four-star completing with a double-clear at Burghley on the homebred Bit of a Barney. She competed and completed her first Badminton in 2007 with Partly Pickled – the full brother to Bit of a Barney – winning the award for ‘best first-timer’.

Louise who is married to Greg Harwood, is an instructor (BHSII) and an accredited BE coach. She trains for dressage with Adam Kemp.

Mr Potts, owned by the rider, is a 14-year-old homebred gelding, bred by Louise’s mother Jackie Skelton. He is by Old Leighlin, an Irish Sport Horse that stood in the UK and sired several good event horses including Rumpy Pumpy and Trefeinin Angel. Mr Potts dam, Much of a Muddle, is by the ID sire Roma Diamond Skip. Much of a Muddle is the half-sister to Louise’s former four-star rides and full brothers Bit of Barney and Partly Pickled who both completed Burghley and Badminton.

Whitson, owned by Emma Baker-Jones and Mr Roy Baker, is a 13-year-old British-bred gelding. He was bred by Roy Baker and is by the British-bred sire Cameo’s Reflection (a son of Dallas) out of a mare by the Irish Draught Coosheen Liam. He has been produced through the grades by Louise. In 2014 he completed his first four-star at Pau (13th) and was BE’s top scoring horse of the year and best British-bred.
